CHAPTER SIX

OUTSIDE the window in the clinic, some of the roses were wilting in the July heat.

‘Adriana, has anyone watered the roses this morning?’ Charlotte asked, as she began to clear up the treatment room after their last patient’s examination.

Adriana lifted a bowl of washing-up water from the sink. ‘The gardener was in early this morning and he gave them some water. I’ve just done the coffee-cups so they can have this water, too. It would be a shame to waste it.’

As Adriana went out through the side entrance to the garden, carrying her bowl, Charlotte went back to her desk to check the emails on her computer. It looked as if she might be free for the rest of the day unless there was a sudden emergency.

There was the sound of footsteps outside in the corridor. She looked up as Iannis walked in, wiping the sweat from his forehead with a large white handkerchief.

He grinned at her, his face more like a mischievous schoolboy’s than that of an experienced doctor.

‘Hope I wasn’t missed too much this morning. I’ve been fishing with Stelios since the crack of dawn. We’ve got a good catch, so I hope you’ll have dinner with me this evening at the taverna so we can sample some of it.’

Charlotte leaned back against her chair and smiled. She could feel her whole body relaxing again at the sight of him. For the last month, since they’d become lovers, she’d found herself recognising every little nuance of his character. And one thing she’d discovered was that he didn’t like to be cooped up for too long. When he’d been working solidly for a few days he became restless. So when she’d got his message this morning on a scrap of paper pushed under her door, she hadn’t been surprised.

The message had said, ‘I need a break. My mobile’s switched on if you need me, but give me a few hours if you can.’

She’d worried, as she always did, that he might have gone to see Fiona. His attention-seeking wife was still on the island and showed no sign of leaving. Everywhere Charlotte went she was reminded of Fiona’s presence. If she and Iannis went to the taverna, sure enough, Fiona and her mother would turn up, expecting to be greeted in a friendly manner. Even though Iannis constantly tried to reassure her that he was merely being polite to his ex-wife and mother-in-law, Charlotte couldn’t banish her doubts.

So hearing that Iannis had merely been out fishing was very reassuring.

‘I wouldn’t mind a break from work myself,’ Charlotte said, as she switched off her computer.

‘I would have taken you fishing if it hadn’t been so early.’

Charlotte smiled. ‘Oh, I don’t mean early morning fishing. I’m glad you didn’t wake me up. I’d prefer a break in the warm sunshine.’

‘Come with me to see how Andy’s getting on and then I’ll take you out in my boat. Somewhere not too far round the coast. We’re not busy today, and I can easily get back if there’s a call from the clinic.
